Multicultural Fashion | Beauty in the Mix

A multicultural society does not reject the culture of the other but is prepared to listen, to see, to dialogue and, in the final analysis, to possibly accept the other’s culture without compromising its own. :  Reuven Rivlin.

Beauty In The Mix

The fact that I, Ayobami Ige is a Nigerian living in Canada alongside people from different part of the world is proof that we live in a diverse time. When having a conversation with people, one of the most frequent questions asked is “Where do you come from” which leads to a further discussion of our cultures.

Diversity in the fashion Industry is not hiding under a large piece of fabric. It is, in fact, open for everyone to see. We see people from different parts of the world making headlines in the media although it did not stop there, the western runways showcase designs that embrace styles from various cultures. This idea of multiculturalism has made a lot of impact in our world today, especially in the society we live in.

Adding Cultural pieces to your daily style is not so difficult, it can be done in different ways, either by the cut of the clothing or by the prints on the fabric. You can use large pieces or pair it with your daily style in small pieces. Personally, I do it in a lot of ways. I have gone from using kente accessories like bow ties, cummerbunds, and pocket squares from Ghana with a corporate outfit to pairing a simple turtleneck with pants made out Ankara from Nigeria as you can see in the pictures.

I must confess I have only used African pieces but I will be exploring more cultures in the future. Most people are afraid to go all out with color, that’s fine because all you need is one piece which you can tone down with a neutral color. This makes your outfit not as loud giving you a safe multicultural style. A “Beauty in the mix”.

Embracing multicultural fashion is very important in the world today because of issues such as racism, tribalism and other forms of prejudice that arise from hate. It is unfortunate that hate is rampant on our streets. I just want to encourage us that it is not a taboo to relate with someone from an entirely different culture. Your beliefs might be different but that shouldn’t be the reason to hate. Disagreement is not directly proportional to hate.

“The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12 vs 31

Even the bible says to love your neighbor as yourself, there was no condition on who you should love. The Unconditional love you have for yourself, show it to the next person beside you.

I digress, Let’s get back to fashion. If you are open enough to add clothing pieces from different parts of the world to your wardrobe, you will be adding a new life to your style. Always remember to mix it up with pieces you already have and are comfortable with. Multiculturalism in the fashion industry and in our style is a non-lethal weapon used to fight racism and tribalism in our society. Therefore, I urge you to embrace your culture and other cultures to bring beauty to the mix in the world.

How do you deal with the situation where multicultural dressing may bring unwanted attention?

The truth is if you look good and unique in a good way, you are going to get lots of attention. You can choose to answer them or not. Just be polite in what ever way you choose to respond. The goal for multiculturalism in fashion is to close the gap between different cultures and the attention you get is a way to reach out to those people interested in your style and culture. You don’t have to use cultural pieces everyday but on the days you are willing to have a conversation you can dress multiculturally if that’s a word
